02Notre Histoire

A quiet chemistry — distilled in Provence, decanted in Lyon.

I learned to read in my grandmothers apothecary in Avignon.

Camille Aubert, our founder, started Lumière above a Lyon tabac in 2018 with one essence and a vacuum chamber. Eight years on, the lab is bigger and we still cold-distil our rose at sunrise — that part has not changed.

03LIngrédient

Four molecules. Eighteen years of choosing them.

Every formula begins as a debate between a chemist and a botanist. These are the four debates we lost.

Bulgarian Rose

01 / 04

Rosa damascena · Valley of Roses, Bulgaria

Bulgarian Rose

Cold-distilled at sunrise — when the petals hold the most oil.

Each bottle of L'Essence Lumière contains the cold-pressed soul of two thousand petals. Our rose is grown without irrigation in the Kazanlak Valley by a co-operative we've worked with since the second harvest. The pickers begin at four in the morning and stop when the sun rises higher than the hills.

Niacinamide

02 / 04

Vitamin B3 · Pharma-grade synthesis, Lyon

Niacinamide

The single most-studied vitamin in modern dermatology.

Niacinamide is the multi-tool of skin science: it refines pores, reinforces the lipid barrier, evens tone, and plays well with everything else in a routine. We use it at 5% — the concentration the journals consistently identify as the inflection point between effective and irritating.

Bakuchiol

03 / 04

Psoralea corylifolia · Indian Babchi seed, organically farmed

Bakuchiol

The only plant compound shown in head-to-head trials to match retinol's wrinkle metric.

We chose bakuchiol for the night cream because it does the smoothing work of a retinoid — without sun-sensitising, without peeling, and without contraindication during pregnancy. Our bakuchiol is supercritically extracted from organically farmed Babchi seed, which keeps the antioxidants intact through the formulation.

French Oak Roburins

Quercus robur · Bordeaux barrel staves

French Oak Roburins

The same polyphenols that age fine wine, repurposed to defend the dermal matrix.

Élixir Reine is built on a polyphenol called roburins, distilled from spent Bordeaux oak barrels. The same compounds that protect a wine's tannin structure across decades protect skin's collagen scaffold against oxidative load — and the irony of skincare made from wine barrels is not lost on us.

04Le Rituel

Two rituals.
Four minutes each.

The same eight bottles, choreographed two different ways. Morning is for defence — barrier, brightening, hydration. Evening is for repair — peptides, retinaldehyde, the slow work of the night shift.

I sleep harder. I wake up softer.

Three weeks in. The texture along my jaw — the bit I usually conceal away — is the smoothest it's been since I was thirty. I don't review skincare. I'm reviewing this.

Worth the £85.

I bought it because the bottle is beautiful (be honest). I repurchased because the cream is the only thing my skin doesn't refuse in winter.

Replaced two products and a serum

I cancelled three subscriptions after two weeks of this. That alone made it cheap.

The base of every routine I now own

It's water and rose. The trick is what it makes everything underneath and on top of it do. My moisturiser stretched 40% further. My serum stopped pilling.

Reminds me of home

I grew up on Japanese essences and this is the first European brand that understood the category. Cool to the touch, dries to nothing, and the rose isn't a perfume.

Saved my barrier

Came off retinol cold-turkey because of pregnancy. This kept my skin from rebelling. Still using it five months in.

Brightening that doesn't sting

I've been allergic to every L-ascorbic vitamin C I've tried. THD is the answer. My pigmentation is visibly lifting and my skin barrier is intact.

The dewdrop you always wanted

Three weeks in and people keep asking if I'm using a new highlighter. There's no highlighter. There's just this.
